Invokana Lawsuit Settlements
When powerful pharmaceutical companies manufacture and market defective drugs that they know pose threats to the public health, yet they fail to warn patients of potentially harmful effects, they can be held liable for any injuries or deaths that result. However, it takes a personal injury attorney with the right skills, education, experience, and fortitude to stand up to these corporate behemoths. Board-certified personal injury trial law specialist Roger “Rocky” Walton is just such an attorney.
Janssen, the manufacturer of the type 2 diabetes drug Invokana, has recently started warning patients that acute kidney injuries have been associated with use of the drug. This is after a multitude of lawsuits have been filed against the pharmaceutical giant. There is evidence, however, that the manufacturer knew of potential risks associated with use of Invokana and failed to warn the public of these risks when it brought the drug to market. As it stands, Invokana has still not been recalled, and a heightened risk of diabetic ketoacidosis, kidney failure, heart attack, and bone fracture remain associated with use of the drug.
If you or someone you love has been injured in any way while taking Invokana, and you would like to learn more about Invokana lawsuits or potential Invokana lawsuit settlements, Arlington, TX personal injury attorney Roger “Rocky” Walton would welcome the opportunity to review your case and advise you of your legal rights and options. What Is Invokana and What Are Its Risks?
Invokana is a drug that is intended to help regulate blood glucose levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. Its active ingredient is canagliflozin. Invokana triggers the kidneys to remove sugar from the body through the urine stream, thereby helping to keep blood sugar levels in check.
There are other medications that work similarly to Invokana but do not pose the same risks. If Janssen had issued the proper warnings as to the known risks of Invokana, doctors could have prescribed alternative medications or, in cases in which they felt patients were best served by Invokana, monitored those patients more closely while they were using the drug.
One of the greatest known risks associated with Invokana is a heightened risk of diabetic ketoacidosis, or DKA. DKA is marked by the production of ketones, toxic acids that can accumulate in the blood and lead to diabetic comas. If left untreated, DKA can result in death.
Other risks associated with Invokana include cardiovascular complications, including heart attack; kidney damage; kidney failure; a heightened risk of bone fracture; and a decrease in bone mineral density.
